Get the Look: Lorelai Gilmore’s Living Room
With fall upon us, it felt like the perfect time for this post! Gilmore Girls is the quintessential fall television show. Stars Hollow is almost perpetually in fall and it makes me itch for cooler weather, sweaters, hot coffee and movie nights. I find myself watching it just so I can feast my eyes on the set. I’ve mentioned before that the setting of a show is as important to me as the plot. I need visual stimulation! The set of Gilmore Girls is iconic, Lorelai’s house in particular. The set designers created such a cozy environment for Lorelai and Rory. Lorelai’s style includes plenty of florals, antiques, layers of cozy textiles, and lots of wood tones. It’s a little messy and chaotic, but I think that creates the warm, lived-in feeling.
Let’s break it down, and then we’ll get to the “get the look”:
The sofa is a roll arm, slipcovered sofa with plenty of pillows and blankets. It feels like the perfect place to plop down with candy and popcorn for a Casablanca movie night. The base pieces like the sofa, coffee table and side tables are pretty traditional in shape and style. But it’s infused with a youthfulness with the colorful pillows and playful accessories.
Lighting is layered in with lots of lamps and sconces. Every wall has something hanging on it, whether a quilt, sconces or curtains. It creates a welcoming environment for Rory and Lorelai to come home to.
Accessories galore! Texture is brought in with the woven rugs, crocheted blankets, lace curtains and moldings. This much texture and pattern might be too much for some people, but it feels perfect for the chaotic nature of the Gilmore gals.
Now onto the good stuff: get the look! (I linked the items below.)
I chose traditional pieces for the furniture and kept things playful with pattern and texture. The sofa is a traditional slipcovered sofa, perfect for washing since Lorelai and Rory eat every meal on the couch. The coffee table is generous in size to allow for plenty of candy and snacks. It might seem like a lot of lamps for one space, but if you watch the show you’ll see there are always TONS of lamps turned on. (I tried to find the iconic “semi-pornographic, leering monkey lamp,” but I couldn’t find it anywhere! Bummer.) I added fun pillows that felt like ones Lorelai would buy. The quilt is meant to hang on the wall, much like one is hanging on the staircase wall.
I loved putting this one together! Are there any other sets you’d like me to create a “Get the Look” for?
